These past years, parish priests and consecrated persons have been asking the Diocesan Commission on Liturgy and Popular Religiosity for a practical guide for the catechesis, training, and formation of choirs and musicians. After years of discussion, consultation, and research, the commission is pleased to present the local church this very essential document.
In reality, parish choirs and musicians have not been receiving spiritual and pastoral formation.
The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish a life-long partnership between themselves, derives its force and strength from creation, but for the Christian faithful it is also raised up to a higher dignity, since it is numbered among the Sacraments of the new covenant.
The chants to be sung during the Rite of Marriage should be appropriate and should express the faith of the Church, with attention paid to the importance of the Responsorial Psalm within the Liturgy of the Word. What is said concerning the chants applies also to the selection of other musical works.
DOPMLM under the Commission on Liturgy and Popular Religiosity is encouraging home-grown music composers to submit their original compositions to be used in the Diocese.

In the Diocese of Parañaque, the Chrism Mass is a solemn and significant liturgy, traditionally celebrated during Holy Week at the Cathedral Parish of St. Andrew, presided over by the bishop of the diocese. This sacred gathering includes the blessing and consecration of the holy oils—the Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick, and the Sacred Chrism—which are essential in the administration of sacraments throughout the year, including Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders, and the Anointing of the Sick.
During this Mass, all priests of the Diocese of Parañaque come together in unity to renew their priestly vows, reaffirming their commitment to their vocation and their connection to the bishop. After the oils are blessed, they are distributed to parishes across the diocese for sacramental use.
This sacred celebration underscores the oneness of the Church, the continuation of Christ’s mission, and the spiritual sustenance of the faithful through the sacraments.

We are servants of God, servants of the Sacred Liturgy, and servants of our Christian communities. Let us make our service not about us, but about Christ among us.

Music plays a very important part in the celebration of the liturgy - it helps preserve the solemnity and integrity of the Mass. It encourages the faithful to pray and participate fully as we give thanks to God and prepare to receive our Lord, Jesus.

Together with other lay liturgical ministers, the MLM is tasked to ensure that the faithful understand the message of the celebration from beginning to end.
Given this very important task, we have to remember that as choir leaders and members we are not performers showcasing our talents when we sing at mass. We are ministers who guide the faithful in praying through our music in the highest form of worship for us Catholics - the celebration of the Eucharist.

The beauty of the Liturgy lies in the appropriateness of the music, and the full and active participation of the people celebrating it. We, the liturgical music ministers, must be equiped in selecting music for the liturgy and must develop a passion for finding ways on how to make the faithful participate in the singing during our celebrations.
Generally, Choral music encourages listening than participating. More often than not, skillful singing of a full SATB arrangements in our Eucharistic Celebrations construde as performances. This is simply because singing in SATB is unnecessary in the Catholic Liturgy.
My challenge to the parishes is to spend their time, treasure and talent to the essentials rather than the esthetics. Essentials are legit liturgical formation, organ accompaniment training, research and development of appropriate music, planning a strategic methodology for participative singing.
